Speaker Tips and Guidelines

Every year, thousands of individuals attend HDA events. In addition to the many networking opportunities available at these meetings, attendees appreciate and expect that the sessions they attend will be well planned and thought-provoking, with significant take-home value. This guide has been compiled to help you plan, prepare and deliver a professional presentation. Even if you are a seasoned speaker or facilitator, we encourage you to take a few moments to review the contents on this page.

  • If you are planning to speak with another person, or as part of a panel, it cannot be stressed enough the importance of communication among speakers during program planning. An established order of presentation and general content of each speaker’s remarks should be known by all if working with other speakers for your session. Communication with others in your session will avoid unnecessary duplication of content and will result in a more smoothly run program.
  • Tips for a smooth process on site:
    • Be sure to arrive to your meeting room 15–45 minutes before you are schedule to speak to check on A/V, meet with your fellow panelists (if applicable) and do any last-minute rehearsing as necessary.
    • When giving your presentation, make sure it is not a sales pitch and your presentation is appropriate for the session and audience.
    • It is important that all speakers stay on time. Room moderators have been instructed to stop you from speaking if you go over the allotted time.
