ARLINGTON, Va. — Today, HDMA mourns the loss of Henry Dale Smith, Sr., Founder and Chairman Emeritus of H. D. Smith, who passed away this weekend at the age of 87.
“We are saddened to learn of the loss of Henry — a pharmacist; healthcare distribution giant; community leader; active HDMA member; and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather — whose early vision continues to guide H. D. Smith’s successful operations and supply chain leadership today and will continue to do so well into the future,” said HDMA President and CEO John M. Gray. “On behalf of HDMA and the Center for Healthcare Supply Chain Research, we extend our deepest sympathies to the entire H. D. Smith family, including his wife Betty, his sons, Dale, Rogers, Chris and Andrew and their families.”
Mr. Smith was actively involved as an HDMA member (then known as the National Wholesale Druggists Association, NWDA), serving as Chairman of the NWDA Pharmaceutical Marketing Committee in 1975, as well as on the Board of Directors (1984-1986). In 2003, Mr. Smith was honored with the pharmaceutical distribution industry’s highest honor — the Nexus Award for Lifetime Achievement, presented by HDMA’s research foundation, the Center for Healthcare Supply Chain Research.
Dale Smith, Chairman and CEO of H. D. Smith Holding Company, currently serves on the HDMA Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Chris Smith, President and CEO, H. D. Smith, is a former Executive Committee and Board member.
HDA is the national association representing primary healthcare distributors, the vital link between the nation’s pharmaceutical manufacturers and healthcare providers. Each business day, HDA member companies ensure that over 15 million prescription medicines and healthcare products are delivered safely and efficiently to more than 200,000 pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics and others nationwide. HDA and its members work daily to provide value and achieve cost savings, an estimated $42 billion each year to our nation’s healthcare system.
