As the logistics experts of healthcare, pharmaceutical distributors play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the supply chain, but also when health challenges arise, such as a natural disaster or shortages in medicines.
Today, the country is grappling with the opioid crisis, a complex issue that will only be solved if stakeholders across the public health, prevention and healthcare communities work collaboratively to address its root causes.
To do our part and help address the opioid abuse epidemic, HDA has brought together partners from the healthcare supply chain and public health communities to launch Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA), a national education and awareness initiative.
Through AAOA, we are working with partners — including the Alliance for Aging Research, American Physical Therapy Association, Caregiver Action Network, Healthcare Leadership Council, Mental Health America, National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, National Community Pharmacists Association, National Council on Patient Information and Education and the PA Foundation — to ensure crucial information and educational resources about safe use, storage and disposal of prescription opioids are accessible to patients and families across the nation.
This effort builds on distributors’ role as the vital link in the healthcare supply chain, bringing together stakeholders to solve challenges. Similarly, AAOA serves as a centralized information resource, connecting providers, pharmacists and the public to education about the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioids.
As the country works to address our nation’s opioid abuse epidemic, AAOA, in coordination with HDA and other partners, is working to ensure patients, their families and friends as well as healthcare providers and pharmacists have information and resources to help prevent the misuse and abuse of prescription opioids.
Allied Against Opioid Abuse is a national education and awareness initiative to help prevent abuse and misuse of prescription opioids. Founded by the Healthcare Distribution Alliance, the initiative is a collaborative effort with diverse partners across the pharmaceutical supply chain, as well as organizations that are experts in public health and healthcare, including ADvancing States, Alliance for Aging Research, American Pharmacists Association, American Physical Therapy Association, BeMedWise, Caregiver Action Network, Gerontological Society of America, Healthcare Leadership Council, HealthyWomen, Men’s Health Network, Mental Health America, National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration, National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities, National Community Pharmacists Association, National Consumers League, National Hispanic Medical Association, National Transitions of Care Coalition, Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and the PA Foundation. Our goal is to contribute to solving the opioid crisis in a meaningful way by educating patients about their rights, risks and responsibilities. The Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) represents primary pharmaceutical distributors — the vital link between the nation’s pharmaceutical manufacturers and pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics and others nationwide. Since 1876, HDA has helped members navigate regulations and innovations to get the right medicines to the right patients at the right time, safely and efficiently. The HDA Research Foundation, HDA’s non-profit charitable foundation, serves the healthcare industry by providing research and education focused on priority healthcare supply chain issues.
