ARLINGTON, Va. — Following the passage of legislation to reauthorize the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act, Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) President and CEO John M. Gray released this statement.
“HDA pharmaceutical distributors are a critical partner in delivering lifesaving medicines and healthcare products to those in need — and our members are on the frontlines to respond to catastrophic events. We are pleased that the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act of 2019 (PAHPA, S. 1379) recognizes the vital role HDA members play by ensuring distributors have access to improved information sharing and re-entry procedures in declared disaster zones.
“Before, during and after declared disasters or other public health emergencies, pharmaceutical distributors leverage their logistics expertise to ensure continued access to necessary medications and healthcare supplies to facilities within affected zones. Given our members’ unique position at the center of the supply chain, we coordinate directly with public and private partners to ensure aid is delivered quickly and efficiently. However, in past disaster declarations, HDA pharmaceutical distributors were impacted significantly by insufficient communication and coordination between emergency responders. That is why we support a stronger, coordinated federal effort to manage and support product availability in partnership with private-sector entities that specialize in medical product transport and delivery.
“HDA thanks members of Congress for their leadership on this issue. We now call on the president to sign this important legislation.”
The Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) represents primary pharmaceutical distributors — the vital link between the nation’s pharmaceutical manufacturers and pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics and others nationwide. Since 1876, HDA has helped members navigate regulations and innovations to get the right medicines to the right patients at the right time, safely and efficiently. The HDA Research Foundation, HDA’s non-profit charitable foundation, serves the healthcare industry by providing research and education focused on priority healthcare supply chain issues.
