HDA Statement on Biden Administration COVID-19 Relief and Vaccine Distribution Plan

January 16, 2021

ARLINGTON, Va. — HDA President and CEO Chester “Chip” Davis, Jr., released a statement following President-elect Biden’s introduction of a COVID-19 vaccination plan.

“HDA and its members — who distribute medications and products from 1,400 pharmaceutical manufacturers to more than 180,000 pharmacies and healthcare providers — are committed to supporting the incoming Biden administration in accelerating our nation’s efforts to provide access to vaccines for every American. Our members are already integrally engaged in COVID-19 response efforts — from PPE sourcing and distribution, to vaccine and ancillary supplies distribution, to therapeutics distribution and beyond.

“As President-elect Biden has outlined, in the coming weeks and months the supply of vaccines and demand for vaccinations should increase, and will require a heightened level of engagement across the entire pharmaceutical supply chain in close coordination with the public sector. A key component of the incoming administration’s plan will be to ‘fully activate pharmacies across the country.’ We could not agree more. As is the case with the hospital systems and long-term care settings already active in vaccine administration, HDA distributors work closely with their pharmacy partners every day — from the largest urban areas to the most remote rural communities — to ensure Americans have the medicines they need.

“As new vaccines and thousands of administration sites are expected to come online, we believe that our long-standing partnership with the pharmacy community and all existing healthcare channels should be leveraged to the fullest extent possible to ensure efficiency, and ultimately success, in vaccinating as many Americans as quickly as possible. The member companies of HDA stand ready to engage to support our nation’s vaccine effort.

“As the backbone of the U.S. healthcare ecosystem, distributors have the logistics know-how, experience, relationships and ability to reach every state and territory — assets and expertise we offer to the incoming administration as the vaccination effort intensifies and broadens in scope. HDA and our distributor members remain steadfast in our commitment to serve as a growing resource to the new administration, federal and state authorities, and healthcare providers across the country as we work in partnership to implement President-elect Biden’s plan and bring all forces to bear in the fight against COVID-19 in the U.S.”

The Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) represents primary pharmaceutical distributors — the vital link between the nation’s pharmaceutical manufacturers and pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics and others nationwide. Since 1876, HDA has helped members navigate regulations and innovations to get the right medicines to the right patients at the right time, safely and efficiently. The HDA Research Foundation, HDA’s nonprofit charitable foundation, serves the healthcare industry by providing research and education focused on priority healthcare supply chain issues.
