Building on Role as a Convener, HDA Launches Allied Against Opioid Abuse

Posted in

Today, the country is grappling with the opioid crisis, a complex issue that will only be solved if stakeholders across the public health, prevention and healthcare communities work collaboratively to address its root causes.

To do our part and help address the opioid abuse epidemic, HDA has brought together partners from the healthcare supply chain and public health communities to launch Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA), a national education and awareness initiative.

Through AAOA, we are working with partners — including the Alliance for Aging Research, American Physical Therapy Association, Caregiver Action Network, Healthcare Leadership Council, Mental Health America, National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, National Community Pharmacists Association, National Council on Patient Information and Education and the PA Foundation — to ensure crucial information and educational resources about safe use, storage and disposal of prescription opioids are accessible to patients and families across the nation.

This effort builds on distributors’ role as the vital link in the healthcare supply chain, bringing together stakeholders to solve challenges. Similarly, AAOA serves as a centralized information resource, connecting providers, pharmacists and the public to education about the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioids.

  • Rights: Patients have the right to know the full scope of pain relief options available to them, including non-opioid treatments. They should understand how their opioid prescription is dispensed and be aware of partial-fill options, which limit the number of pills patients take home initially.
  • Risks: Prescription opioids carry serious risk of dependence, addiction and overdose, especially with prolonged use. Patients should talk to their healthcare provider to make sure they understand the risks and potential side effects.
  • Responsibilities: Patients can help prevent misuse and abuse by properly storing their prescription opioids in a secure place. Patients also have the responsibility to safely dispose of any unused medication.

AAOA resources also provide patients with the information they need to properly store and dispose of opioids.

As the country works to address our nation’s opioid abuse epidemic, AAOA, in coordination with HDA and other partners, is working to ensure patients, their families and friends as well as healthcare providers and pharmacists have information and resources to help prevent the misuse and abuse of prescription opioids.

The Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) represents primary pharmaceutical distributors — the vital link between the nation’s pharmaceutical manufacturers and pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics and others nationwide. Since 1876, HDA has helped members navigate regulations and innovations to get the right medicines to the right patients at the right time, safely and efficiently. The HDA Research Foundation, HDA’s nonprofit charitable foundation, serves the healthcare industry by providing research and education focused on priority healthcare supply chain issues.
