HDA’s Partnership with the State of Georgia Extends Efforts to Combat the Opioid Epidemic

HDA and its member companies are committed to reversing our nation’s opioid abuse epidemic. That is why the Alliance is working with stakeholders in communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness about the dangers associated with opioid abuse and misuse.

The Alliance recently partnered with Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr to help prevent prescription drug abuse among teens and young adults. As part of Georgia’s response to the opioid crisis, Attorney General Carr conducted the “We’re Not Gonna Take It” video contest to encourage students to engage in the fight against opioid abuse. The statewide contest was open to high school and college students and asked participants to create a 30-second video highlighting the dangers of the opioid epidemic and how they were fighting back. The contest winners were announced on May 21 and the winning video can be viewed here. For the fourth year in a row, HDA and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters are collaborating to air the winning video as a public service announcement on television networks across Georgia.

HDA’s work with AG Carr complements the Alliance’s ongoing response to the opioid abuse epidemic through Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA), a national educational initiative raising awareness about the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioid use. AAOA engages national, state and local partners and brings together community leaders to educate patients, healthcare providers, pharmacists and the public about the safe use, storage and disposal of prescription opioids.

AAOA and its partners have developed online educational resources and are working to ensure that this information is reaching patients, family members and friends to help reduce instances of opioid abuse and misuse and prevent unintended consequences. Materials are available at www.AgainstOpioidAbuse.org.
