This report focuses on the opportunities to improve communications between trading partners as a branded pharmaceutical product nears the end of its patent protection to better manage inventory and reduce costly returns.

In four case studies, the paper takes a National Drug Code-specific analytical review of historical loss of exclusivity (LOE) events to identify manufacturer, distributor and retailer processes and practices impacting residual inventory after the LOE event. The paper outlines suggested trading partner steps to address an LOE event and includes retail process information and aggregated sales and return data for four products that underwent a loss of exclusivity.
