Open to HDA members, the program pairs manufacturers with distributors or third-party service provider professionals to avoid conflicts of interest.
Issues in Distribution //www.hda.org/issues HDA reviews key priority issues and advocates on behalf of its pharmaceutical distributor members for standards, public policies and business processes that ensure a safe and efficient supply chain.
Research Foundation //www.hda.org/foundation The HDA Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Founded in 1980, the organization has undertaken projects that fulfill the charitable, research and education priorities of the healthcare supply chain.
HDA Resources //www.hda.org/resources HDA and the HDA Research Foundation produce a variety of resources to enhance the value of the supply chain and increase industry knowledge.
COVID-19 Response //www.hda.org/issues/covid19-response HDA and its primary pharmaceutical distributor members — a critical link between nearly 1,500 manufacturers and more than 180,000 healthcare providers — are continuing to rise to the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Importation of Prescription Medicines //www.hda.org/issues/importation-of-prescription-medicines HDA opposes permitting the importation into the U.S. of pharmaceuticals sold or designated for sale in foreign countries. HDA firmly believes that allowing importation increases the likelihood of counterfeit or adulterated drugs entering the United States and will not ensure meaningful reductions in the cost of prescription drugs.
Healthcare Affordability //www.hda.org/issues/healthcare-affordability With HDA distributors providing between $33–$53 billion in cost savings to the U.S. healthcare economy each year, our industry is committed to improving access to lower-cost, high-quality medicines for patients.
Pharmacy Services Administrative Organizations //www.hda.org/issues/psaos A Pharmacy Services Administrative Organization (PSAO) interacts with healthcare insurers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) on behalf of independent community pharmacies. Because community pharmacies comprise an approximately 35 percent share of the overall retail pharmacy market in the U.S., the PSAO serves a critical function to help sustain these businesses.
Distributor Licensure //www.hda.org/issues/distributor-licensure The introduction of counterfeit or adulterated medicines into the supply chain is a serious issue that could adversely affect the safety of prescription medicines and the health of patients. To that end, HDA strongly supports tough, rigorous and consistent standards for state licensing of pharmaceutical distributors as required under federal law.
Drug Product Availability //www.hda.org/issues/drug-product-availability Drug shortages have challenged regulatory and supply chain stakeholders alike in recent years. While there are many factors that may result in a product being in short supply, HDA pharmaceutical distributor members play a central role in exchanging and coordinating information when a shortage occurs.
HDA Statement on the PREVENT Pandemics Act /news/2022-03-15-hda-statement-on-the-prevent-pandemics-act The Healthcare Distribution Alliance (HDA) applauds the leadership of Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee’s Chairwoman Murray (D-Wash.) and Ranking Member Burr (R-N.C.) for introducing the Prepare for and Respond to Existing Viruses, Emerging New Threats, and Pandemics Act (PREVENT Pandemics Act), a bipartisan public health effort to build stronger national medical preparedness and response systems in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The overwhelming support for the legislation during the HELP Committee markup today, March 15, showed that Congress is making significant, positive steps towards reforms necessary to ensure the availability of lifesaving pharmaceutical treatments and medical supplies in response to future crises.
Exceptions Handling Guidelines for the DSCSA /resources/exceptions-handling-guidelines-2022 Prepared by technical experts of the HDA Exceptions Handling Work Group, these guidelines were developed to address exceptions that may arise when passing or failing to pass Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA)-required information to authorized trading partners in compliance with the law.
Pharmaceutical Traceability //www.hda.org/issues/pharmaceutical-traceability HDA and the healthcare distribution industry have led on federal traceability issues for nearly two decades. This work culminated in the passage of the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) in 2013. The DSCSA will fundamentally change the way pharmaceutical products and their associated data move in tandem through the supply chain, while increasing safety and security for patients.

Antitrust Policy //www.hda.org/antitrust It is the unqualified policy of HDA and all of its operating committees to conduct their operations in strict compliance with the antitrust laws of the United States.
Careers //www.hda.org/about/careers HDA proudly supports a positive working environment for our staff that allows each individual (and department) to deliver high-quality services to our members, which represent the vital link between the nation’s pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacies, hospitals and other providers.
HDA Conferences and Seminars //www.hda.org/events HDA regularly brings members and key healthcare supply chain stakeholders together to share industry information, learn about best practices, and be introduced to new products and services.
Prescription Drug Abuse and Diversion //www.hda.org/issues/prescription-drug-abuse-and-diversion HDA and our primary pharmaceutical distributor members are committed to bringing industry and government together to tackle our nation’s complex prescription drug abuse and diversion epidemic, a serious healthcare challenge that threatens both patient safety and the security of the healthcare supply chain.

2018 HDA Priorities in Chain Drug Review //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2018/07/25/08/09/2018-hda-priorities-in-chain-drug-review Efforts to mitigate the prescription drug abuse epidemic and activities surrounding DSCSA implementation once again top the list of priorities HDA will be addressing in the year ahead, according to HDA President and CEO John M. Gray. Mr. Gray provided his perspective, along with other healthcare supply chain leaders, as part of Chain Drug Review’s annual “Pharmacy Outlook” feature, published in the January 1 issue.
Pharmaceutical Distributors: Understanding Our Role in the Supply Chain //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2018/09/27/15/32/2018-09-27-understanding-our-role-in-the-supply-chain Few people understand exactly what role wholesale distributors play in the pharmaceutical supply chain, often confusing them with manufacturers, pharmacy benefit managers or even pharmacists. Just like the wholesale distributor who helps keep your grocery store shelves stocked with many different food brands, pharmaceutical distributors work with large numbers of suppliers (in this case pharmaceutical manufacturers) to ensure that their products (medicines) are safely, securely and reliably delivered to their ultimate destination — such as a state and federally licensed pharmacy, hospital or long-term care facility.
HDA Partners with AAOA to Release Pharmacy Toolkit //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2018/09/25/09/54/2018-09-26-aaoa-releases-pharmacy-toolkit For the past several months, HDA has been collaborating with our pharmacy partners at Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA), the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA), to develop a suite of resources specific to the pharmacy community. We are pleased that last week, those resources were mailed to thousands of pharmacists across the country and released online at www.AgainstOpioidAbuse.org/PharmacyToolkit.
DSCSA, the 2023 Requirements and EPCIS //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2020/11/10/17/42/2020-11-11-dscsa-2023-requirements-and-epcis Since the enactment of the Drug Supply Chain Security Act in 2013, members of the pharmaceutical supply chain have undertaken efforts to meet each of the major milestones contained within the statute’s 10-year timeline to further secure the safety of the products being distributed. The industry’s progress to 2023 interoperability was top of mind as supply chain and other stakeholders came together at HDA’s recent Traceability Online Seminar.
Distributors Leading the Way in the Next Phase of COVID-19 //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2020/11/23/13/07/2020-12-04-distributors-leading-the-way Since the emergence of COVID-19, HDA distributor members have worked tirelessly to navigate the exceptional and unprecedented demands of this public health emergency. From managing unique inventory demands of the first hotspots, to ensuring access to emerging treatment options and testing, HDA members draw upon their extensive supply and distribution networks, logistics expertise and experience navigating public health emergencies. Moreover, distributors are committed to the public- and private-sector partnerships that are critical in combating COVID-19, fueling our recovery and improving pandemic resiliency for the future.
The Future Role of Distributors //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2019/12/18/09/16/2019-12-19-the-future-role-of-distributors Distributors sit at the heart of the pharmaceutical supply chain, connecting 180,000 healthcare providers and pharmacies with 1,300 drug manufacturers. Through their partnerships across the industry, pharmaceutical distributors provide the more than 180 million patients who regularly take prescription medicines with safe, quick and low-cost access to more than 4 billion prescription medicines each year.
Safe and Secure, Every Step of the Way //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2019/06/18/09/47/2019-06-19-safe-and-secure Patients often have many questions when they are prescribed a medication by their healthcare provider for the first time. What they typically do not need to worry about, however, is how their prescription medicine got to the pharmacy, whether anything happened to it along its journey, if it was handled with care or if it was potentially compromised by illegitimate products that may have entered the pharmaceutical supply chain.
Healthcare Distribution: Rain, Snow or Shine //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2019/02/01/10/00/2019-02-01-healthcare-distribution-rain-snow-or-shine Pharmaceutical distributors deliver millions of medicines and healthcare products to providers nationwide — rain, snow or shine. Every day, hundreds of thousands of patients across the country depend on the uninterrupted delivery of prescription medicines, and pharmaceutical distributors work around the clock to ensure these products get to where they need to be, safely and efficiently. As winter marches on, with snowstorms and sub-zero temperatures in parts of the country, HDA member companies rise to the challenge of making sure vital medicines reach the people who need them, no matter what it takes.
More Than Just Delivery //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2019/04/25/15/38/2019-04-26-more-than-just-delivery As the logistics experts of healthcare, distributors deliver millions of prescription medicines and healthcare products to hundreds of thousands of providers, including pharmacies, hospitals and healthcare facilities, across the country. But their relationships with these customers is about more than just delivery — distributors offer additional services that allow their customers to focus on patients and remain competitive in the marketplace.
Healthcare Distribution Centers //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2019/01/25/13/58/2019-01-25-healthcare-distribution-centers Pharmaceutical distributors have a long history of bringing the newest advancements and technologies to their warehouses. Back in 1947, the National Wholesale Druggists’ Association (an early iteration of HDA) tapped Ohio State University marketing experts to reimagine an entirely new type of layout for wholesaler warehouses, which included longer aisles, moving belts, “and roller skates for order pickers.” While the roller skates never caught on, healthcare distributors’ commitment to harnessing innovation to develop facilities that safely and securely get prescription medicines and medical products to the patients who need them has only grown.
That's A Great Question //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2019/05/16/09/44/2019-05-16-a-great-question Most Americans take for granted the complex pharmaceutical supply chain that ensures their medication arrives safely, reliably and efficiently at the pharmacy, doctor’s office or hospital. Have you ever wondered how pharmacies and healthcare providers keep these vital medicines in stock so that patients have access to medicines when they need them, even during weather emergencies?
Davis Spotlights HDA's 2021 Strategic Priorities //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2021/01/05/16/19/2021-01-05-davis-spotlights-hda-2021-strategic-priorities HDA will be carrying forward the early lessons learned from COVID-19 pandemic and supporting response efforts in 2021, writes President and CEO Chip Davis in the January 4 issue of Chain Drug Review — particularly as distributors play a role in the largest public vaccination effort in recent memory. Davis provided his perspective on the year ahead, along with other healthcare trade association leaders, as part of the publication’s 2021 “Pharmacy Outlook” feature.
Healthcare Distributors Playing Central Role As COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign Accelerates //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2021/02/28/16/14/2021-03-01-distributors-playing-central-role-covid19-vaccines We have reached another pivotal moment in the fight against COVID-19: the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate for emergency use. With demand for vaccines currently outpacing supply, the addition of a third candidate is welcome news for Americans. Most importantly, a one-dose option that only requires refrigeration will provide greater flexibility in delivering vaccines to more individuals, including those in underserved and rural areas, with the ability to scale up production exponentially as we move into the spring and summer months.
Health Delivered: Reaffirming Distributors' Fundamental Value to U.S. Healthcare //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2021/03/25/11/42/2021-04-05-health-delivered For the past year, I have watched the men and women of the healthcare distribution industry go above and beyond on a daily basis to make sure medicines, vaccines, PPE and other medical supplies reached patients and providers across the country. Their energy, determination and commitment have ensured a resilient supply chain during the most challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic and a distribution network that has continued to deliver value each and every day.
VRS Update: Past, Present, Future //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2018/12/07/14/44/2018-12-12-vrs-update-past-present-future The Verification Router Service (VRS) started off as an idea in 2015. In 2016, it was identified as a preferred option for compliance with the 2019 saleable returns requirement (along with sending data via EPCIS). Since 2017, HDA has been convening industry stakeholders to write business requirements for the VRS, later pulling in solution providers to help with the technical details and then facilitating the group that developed the documentation that exists today.
Securing the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Against Scammers //www.hda.org/news/hda-blog/2022/05/26/12/01/securing-the-pharmaceutical-supply-chain-against-scammers The global supply chain continues to face scrutiny, with port backups and product shortages grabbing headlines. However, as Chuck Forsaith, Vice President and Founder of HDA’s Pharmaceutical Cargo Security Coalition (PCSC), shared in a recent episode of the Pharmacy Crossroads podcast, there is another supply chain risk impacting trading partners throughout the healthcare distribution industry — which HDA’s PCSC has been diligently tracking and working to combat. Pharmacy Crossroads, hosted by pharmacy industry veteran Bruce Kneeland, provides an insider voice for the community pharmacy industry and is a member of the Pharmacy Podcast Network.
