Recognizing the Vital Role of Pharmacists Today and Every Day

October 31, 2022
October marks American Pharmacists Month, an important opportunity to recognize the contributions of the dedicated pharmacists who play a critical role in the health of their communities.

Pharmacists are often the most accessible, trusted healthcare providers for patients nationwide, giving essential care and support for a range of health conditions every day. A nationwide analysis conducted by the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA) found that nearly 89 percent of the U.S. population lives within 5 miles of a community pharmacy.

The COVID-19 response has underscored the vital role of pharmacists, as they serve on the front lines to vaccinate Americans. A recent JAPhA study found that pharmacists accounted for over 50 percent of COVID-19 vaccinations in the U.S. and averted more than one million deaths. Pharmacists are also critical in providing shots for routine viruses, like the flu, and vaccines for other emerging illnesses. Beyond the recent COVID public health crisis, pharmacists offer exceptional value to the neighborhoods in which they operate, serving as counselors, educators and advocates for patients.

In recognition, HDA’s latest video features President and CEO Chip Davis spotlighting the tireless efforts of our nation’s pharmacists and emphasizing the distribution sector’s support of their work. By delivering millions of medicines, vaccines and medical supplies, among other services, distributors serve as partners to pharmacists.
